Purpose
The purpose of this competition is to encourage the contestant to engineer an existing solar-powered boat kit to enhance efficiency and design.
Procedure
(1) Secure a solar powered boat kit from Winston Science, 5707 Royal, Dallas, TX 75229 (214.691.6950). The cost of the kit is underwritten by both Winston Science & PITSCO. [$20]
(2) Re-engineer the boat so that it can travel across the Fair Park Lagoon in the shortest possible course.
(3) Contestants can only use the contents of the kit, hot glue, and duck tape to engineer their boat.
(4) The boat must be capable of running off the battery in the event of less favorable weather.
(5) Teams should consider the following engineering concerns:
(a) How can I improve the design to insure that the boat will travel across the lagoon?
(b) How can I engineer the boat to insure that it floats properly in the water?
(c) How can I improve the effciency of the solar panel based on the limitation that I can only use materials in the kit.
(6) Teams will have one opportunity to run their boat down the trough. The boat that completes the journey in the shortest amount of time will be declared the winner.
(7) Address additional questions to LehmanM743@aol.com.
