Armadillo Aerospace: Featured at ScienceFEST
Armadillo Aerospace
Armadillo Aerospace won outright the NASA / Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge Level I for $350,000 and threw down the gauntlet with a successful Level II mission. They will know by October 31st if they have won the $1,000,000 prize. They have also successfully completed testing of the Rocket Racing League prototype, a rocket powered aerobatic aircraft, and will be starting the second vehicle. Armadillo Aerospace is almost ready to announce their entry into the sub-orbital space transportation market with a new partnership and a new vehicle.

Armadillo Aerospace

Neil MILBURN was born in Middlesborough, England and is the British version of the Rocket Boys. His fascination with space and rocketry began with that same seminal moment, staring in to the skies of Northern England to try and spot Sputnik. His formative years were spent watching the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs from afar. Unfortunately, England was the wrong side of the “pond” to be involved in space and his hope of becoming an astronaut was further dashed when he discovered he could not join the Royal Air Force as a fighter pilot because of poor eyesight. He subsequently graduated with an Honours Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Leeds and married the love of his life Susan in 1973. Neil then spent almost thirty years in private industry in a variety of roles – engineering, international sales and marketing - before he found his niche doing small engineering company start-ups and turnarounds. In this role he moved to the USA in 1982 and forgot to go home (but legal … a US citizen since 2006.) In 2003 he “semi-retired” and fulfilled a lifelong promise to payback a childhood debt to his mentors by taking up teaching. For his “day job” he currently teaches International Baccalaureate Physics in North Texas. That’s the day job!

Edna Devore
Deputy CEO and Director of Education & Public Outreach SETI Institute

Science and astronomy educator Edna DeVore is the Deputy CEO and the Director of Education and Public Outreach (EPO) at the SETI Institute. She’s been a researcher, planetarium director, teacher, and curriculum writer, and currently is busy with projects related to education and SETI. Notable among these are the “Life in the Universe” curriculum materials for students in grades 3-9 and a new high school course, “Voyages Through Time”. Edna also co-directs the education and public outreach programs for two NASA missions: SOFIA and Kepler. SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) is a modified 747 commercial jet that will carry a large (2.5 m) telescope up to 45,000 feet to observe the universe in infrared wavelengths – a part of the spectrum which cannot be seen from the ground. The Kepler Mission is a space-based telescope that will hunt for Earth-sized planets in orbit about Sun-like stars.

Edna says she was fascinated by the sky in the summers of her childhood near California’s Sierra Nevada mountains. Brilliant stars and the glittering Milky Way shimmered overhead from her front yard, unsullied by street lights. The sky was a part of the evening’s entertainment. Then, as an undergraduate, she took physics and encountered astronomy. That led Edna to work in planetariums, further education, and eventually her current work at the Institute. Now she’s bringing the excitement and knowledge of science to new generations. It’s hard to think of anything more important.
