(Back to Competitions)

(Printable Version)

(1) Contestants in Grades 7 and 8 will assemble a team of up to four competitors from the same school for the purpose of solving a problem.

(2) Grades 7 and 8 will be challenged with a 45-minute construction or engineering project.

(3)Each problem will involve the basic concepts of science, and will require the team to apply these principles to the solution of their challenge. Teams in each grade group will be assigned the same problem.

(4) Specific deadlines or goals will be announced at the beginning of each competition. A team that does not present a solution to the problem will be disqualified.

(5) Teams will be supplied with all the materials necessary to complete the challenge, except for calculators.

(6) Teams must designate one team member as their Team Captain. This individual must represent the team in all communications with the judges.

(7) Team Captains may ask for clarification on the scope of the project, project expectations, what resource materials are available, time remaining, etc. The judges, however, reserve the right not to answer an inquiry on the basis that their answer might prejudice the results of another team.

(8) If a judge renders a decision, or answers a question, which provides a clarification of the problem, this decision or interpretation will be shared with all other teams, where possible.

(9) The winner of the competition will be the team that offers the best solution to the problem within the time provided. Judges look at clarity of solution, imagination, and whether the answer reflects a logical approach utilizing currently accepted principles of science.

(10) Winners for each competition will be determined at the end of each event.
