General Requirements
"Contestant" is defined as an individual.
Clarification
If the picture is captured with a digital camera it will be considered digital; if it is captured with a film camera, it will be in the non-digital category, regardless of how it is developed.
- The contestant will:
- Submit a non-digital black & white photograph demonstrating one of the following categories:
- Stop-Action Photography
- Faces
- Submit a non-digital color photo demonstrating one of the following categories:
- Submit a digital photograph demonstrating one of the following categories:
- Digital Stop Action
- Digital Faces
- Digital Sunsets
- Digital Animals
- Digital Experimental
- The entry must be an 8” x 10” photograph mounted on matte board for display. Each photo must have the following information printed on the back of the matte board:
- name of contestant
- home phone of contestant
- school attending
- photography category entered
Students must use the correct Category name as set out in Rule One, above.

- Signed declaration [See below]
Each photo must have the following declaration written on the back:
- I have taken this picture between December, 2006 and November, 2007.
Student signature
- Photographs submitted without all the required information, or improperly mounted, will be disqualified.
- A contestant can enter one photograph per category. Grade Groups do not apply.
- Photographs must be received at the Winston School no later than 6:00 PM, Friday, November 2, 2007.
- After the photographs are judged, the Finalists will be announced on the Winston Science web site. Finalists will be invited to a special awards ceremony scheduled for 7:30 PM, Monday, November 19, 2007.
- Contestants must reclaim their photos no later than December 15, 2007. Photos not reclaimed by December 15th, , 2007 will be donated to schools or hospitals.
Specific Requirements
- Stop-Action Photography
- Motion clearly captured on film
- Explain on the back of the photo the technique used to capture motion.
- Animals
- Identify the object photographed
- State when and where the animal was photographed
- Faces
- "Face" is defined as a human face.
- Identify when and where the photo was taken
- Explain what you were trying to capture in this photograph, for instance: joy, sadness, concern, etc.
- Sunsets
- Identify when and where the picture of the sunset was taken.
- Experimental
- This category goes beyond normal photographs.
- Identify how the photograph has been altered.
Clarification
A black & white photo is defined as a silver gelatin print made by the student, and a digital photo is any print that is manipulated in the darkroom or computer.
Evaluation
The judges will use the following criteria to evaluate the photographs:
Basic Criteria:
- Was the photograph properly mounted on matte board?
- Did the photograph have the all the proper information on the back of the photo?
Specific Criteria:
If the photograph meets both of the criteria set out above, the judges will move on to the following criteria for evaluation:
- Was the photograph in focus?
- Did the photograph capture the essence of the category? For instance, did the Stop Action photograph clearly capture action stopped in a moment-in-time.
Awarding of Prizes
- Judges are entitled to award a first place, second place, third place, or honorable mention in each category.
- If the quality of entries dictates, judges are free to award more than one first place, more than one second place, more than one third place, and more than one honorable mention.
- Conversely, if the quality of entries is less than expected, judges do not have to award all places.
