["Contestant" is defined as an individual or a team of up to four students]

(Back to Competitions)

(1) Build a non-motor driven vehicle that will transport an uncooked egg on the ground a distance of eight meters to a finish line without breaking the egg.

(2) Contestants can use any form of mechanism to power the vehicle with the exception of the following:

  1. no electric motor
  2. no battery-powered motor
  3. no rocket motor (including carbon dioxide cartridge)
  4. no ramp or inclined plane
  5. no measuring tape spring-type device

    (3) Contestants can have no physical contact with their egg car once it has entered the track area.

    (4) Contestants will have an unlimited number of practice runs prior to the beginning of the competition. No additional practice runs will be allowed after the event starts.

    (5) Contestants will have two chances to demonstrate their vehicle. The judges will record the best “time”.

    (6) Vehicles that malfunction on both of these “two runs” will be disqualified and eliminated from the competition.

    (7) The winner of the competition will be the contestant whose egg (measured from the middle of the egg) comes closest to the finish line in the shortest amount of time. “Closest to the finish line” means closest to either side of the finish line.

    (8) Judges will first consider the criteria that the vehicle must come “closest to the finish line.” If two or more vehicles are equally close to the finish line, the judges will apply the “shortest amount of time” criteria.

    (9) Contestants must use eggs supplied by the judges prior to the race. Judges will inspect the condition of the egg both before and after each race.

    (10) If the judges observe a broken egg on a vehicle after the “run,” the vehicle will be disqualified.

    (11) Contestants or bystanders will not be allowed to enter the race course area during the judging process. Intrusion into the race course area will disqualify that “run” of the vehicle.

    (12) The race will be 8 meters by 4 meters. Contestants will be allowed to position their egg car at any point along the 4-meter side of the track to run the 8-meter length. Forward motion of the vehicle ends at any point where the car touches, strikes, or crosses over the line denoting the 8-meter side of the track.
