Purpose
This competition is designed to focus attention on lighter-than-air vehicles.
Construction & Operation
(1) Build a lighter-than-air vehicle using single or multiple balloons. Students can only use helium to fill the balloon(s).
(2) Size requirements for your lighter-than-air vehicle:
- maximum length: 2m
- maximum width: 1m
- maximum height: 1.5m
(3) The blimp must be equipped with a hook hanging from the blimp that will be used to pick up objects.
(4) The blimp must be controlled only by "remote control." Strings, ribbons, or other mechanical devices cannot be used to control the vehicle.
The Competition
The object of the competition is to pick up small plastic army men and airlift them to a box located 2 meters from the pickup site. The team that transports the largest number of army men in 4 minutes will be declared the winner.
The army men will be equipped with a loop to facilitate being hooked by the blimp. The loops will be constructed from small paperclips and will have a one inch diameter.
This competition will focus on blimp maneuverability, and will require the contestant to be very familiar with controlling the blimp.
The contestant will have one try. Contestants are invited to arrive early to practice in the environment of the Automobile Building.
