Make-A-New-Product Competition

  • Grade Groups Do NOT Apply
  • “Contestant” is defined as an individual or a team of up to four students
  • Contestants are required to prepare their products and displays in advance of the competition.

The purpose of this competition is to encourage young minds to expand their thinking and develop their problem solving skills. Students are asked to develop a new product in one of the following categories: (1) New Cosmetic; (2) New Food; or (3) New Household product.

(1)Contestants must invent a new product that could be used and marketed in today’s economy. This product must be also be environmentally friendly.

(2)There are no limitations on the new product, except as set out below. The product must be marketable and environmentally friendly. Marketable means that it should be cost-effective and capable of rendering the producer a profit. It also means that you must be able to effectively package your product to enhance its attraction to the public. Environmentally friendly means that the products developed inflict little harm on the environment.

(3)The cost of your product cannot exceed $25. This does not include expenditures for display or photographs.

(4)Students are allowed to use free or donated materials within their project. The value of these materials should not be considered within the $25 cost limit.

(5)The following is required to complete your project:

  1. Set out which category you are planning to enter:
    1. New Cosmetic
    2. New Food
    3. New Household product
  2. List of expenditures with final costs.
  3. Provide a statement explaining the use and function of the new product.
  4. Include photographs showing development and use of the new product.
  5. A statement explaining how your product if environmentally friendly.

(6)Contestants are required to set up their display prior to the beginning of the competition.

(7)Students must be on hand to demonstrate and explain their product to the judges during the competition.

(8)Criteria for judging includes all of the following:

  1. Does the product accomplish the desired function?
  2. Did the student stay within the budget limitations?
  3. Did the student have all the required items?
  4. Marketability
  5. Neatness and Creativity.
  6. Packaging for the new product.
  7. The student’s oral presentation to the judges.

(9)The winner of the competition will be the contestant that most closely accomplishes the purpose of this competition.

(10)The competition will be divided into the following categories:

  1. New Cosmetic Category
  2. New Food Category
  3. New Household Product Category

(11) The contestant is responsible to see that the judge properly records their score within the accurate category.

(12) The “product” submitted at this competition must be original. It cannot have been entered into any other competition prior to Friday, November 13, 2009

(13) Awards will be presented at the end of the competition.
