Paper Cutouts Competition

Purpose

The purpose of this competition is to bring art to science. Students will have the opportunity to create a three dimensional object from a single piece of paper using only a pair of scissors. Students often make two-dimensional cutouts, but can you create a three-dimensional cutout?

Construction

(1) Students arrive at the competition already possessing a knowledge of how to make a three dimensional object from a single piece of paper.

(2) Students arriving for the competition will receive a single piece of white copy paper and a pair of scissors.

(3) Students will have 30 minutes to cut the paper in such a way to create a three-dimensional object.

(4) Judges will evaluate each student and ask them to explain their work.

Judging

(1) Contestants must be present with their three dimensional paper object to explain their work.

(2) The students will be evaluated based on the quality of their cutouts, the completeness of their explanation, and originality.

(3) Awards will be presented at the end of the competition.
