Photography Competition

General Requirements

(1) The contestant will submit a digital photograph showing one of the following categories:

  • Stop-Action Photography
  • Faces
  • Sunsets
  • Animals
  • Digital Stop Action
  • Experimental

(2) The photograph must be 8” x 10” mounted on matte board for display. Each photo must have the following information printed on the back of the matte board:

  • name of contestant
  • home phone of contestant
  • school attending
  • photography category entered
    • Students must use the correct Category name as set out in Rule One, above.
  • additional information required by each category
  • Signed declaration [See below]

(3) Each photo must have the following declaration written on the back:

I have taken this picture between December, 2007 and November, 2008.

(4) Photographs submitted without all the required information, or improperly mounted will be disqualified.

(5) A contestant can enter only one photograph per category. Grade Groups do not apply.

(6) Photographs must be received at the Winston School no later than 6:00 PM, Friday, November 7, 2008.

(7) After the photographs are judged, the Finalists will be announced on the Winston Science website. Finalists are invited to a special awards ceremony scheduled for 7:30 PM, Monday, November 24, 2008.

(8) Contestants must reclaim their photos no later than December 15, 2008. Photos not reclaimed will be donated to schools or hospitals.

Specific Requirements

(1) Stop-Action Photography

  1. Motion clearly captured
  2. Explain on the back of the photo the technique used to capture motion.

(2) Animals

  1. Identify the object photographed
  2. State when and where the animal was photographed

(3) Faces

  1. “Face” is defined as a human face.
  2. Identify when and where the photo was taken
  3. Explain what you were trying to capture in this photograph, for instance: joy, sadness, concern, etc.

(4) Sunsets

  1. Identify when and where the picture of the sunset was taken.

(5) Experimental

  1. This category goes beyond normal photographs.
  2. Identify how the photograph has been altered.

Evaluation

The judges will use the following criteria to evaluate the photographs:

Basic Criteria:
(1) Was the photograph properly mounted on matte board?
(2) Did the photograph have the all the proper information on the back of the photo?

Specific Criteria:
If the photograph meets both of the criteria set out above, the judges will move on to the following criteria for evaluation:
(1) Was the photograph in focus?
(2) Did the photograph capture the essence of the category? For instance, did the Stop Action photograph clearly capture action stopped in a moment-in-time.

Awarding of Prizes

Judges may award more than one first place, second place, third place, or honorable mention.
