The Competition

This competition is limited to one team per school, unless you have received prior permission to bring more than one team of five students.

Teams will launch their rockets in an attempt to hit a target located 25 meters away. Rockets will be required to stick into the ground as close as possible to a line perpendicular to the earth’s surface, and must remain upright. The team having the most rockets stick upright closest to the target will be declared the winner.

Construction

(1) Teams will build an Alpha Rocket secured from the Winston School. Rockets must be constructed prior to arriving at the competition.

Teams will need to pick up basic Estes Model Rockets from The Winston School no later than Monday, February 23, 2009.

(2) Teams must build the rocket as accurate as possible, but without the parachute. Teams can only use parts provided within the rocket kit.

(3) The nose cone should be glued to the rest of the rocket since no parachute is being used.

(4) Teams will be provided with launch pads, rocket launchers, fuses, and an appropriate B-size rocket for the competition. No other size rocket motor can be used.

(5) Teams will launch all five of their rockets. Staff will make appropriate measurements following the launch.

(6) Staff will record the distances from the “standing” rockets to the target. These distances will be added together for the official team score. A rocket leaving the course area will be scored the same as a rocket that did not stick in the ground.

(7) The team which launched and landed 5 upright rockets with the lowest score will be declared the winner.

(8) In the event that no team launches and lands 5 upright rockets, the team with the largest number of upright rockets and the lowest score will be declared the winner.
